Welcome to VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) at Walker. Our goal here is to offer several different electives for VAPA as we know students have many different talents and gifts to share. We also know Jr. High is a time to try and figure out what you might be good at. We encourage students to step out and try something new in VAPA. Who knows, they may discover a hidden talent. Our programs are as follows:
VISUAL ARTS
ART 1 is a year-long exploratory course. Students are encouraged to think creatively and develop good craftsmanship as they complete a variety of assignments intended to guide and develop their basic art-making skills. Students will learn to express ideas using a variety of materials and techniques. Emphasis during this first year of art instruction will be on life drawing skills, painting, design, ceramics, historical and cultural connections, and fostering the student's abilities as an artist.
ART 2 is a year-long course that continues to build on the skills mastered in Art 1. Students will use the elements of art and the principles of design to create works of art using advanced techniques and a wider range of materials. Students will continue to express their ideas and develop their life drawing, painting, ceramics, and other sculptural skills. An emphasis will be placed on the study of art history as it applies to student’s chosen projects. Prerequisite: Art 1 or permission of teacher.
